Every material, and where it comes from

India's most eco-friendly rakhi collection is a specific claim, not a slogan — so here is every material, named, and what happens to it afterwards.

Every component

  • Rakhi disc — Handmade seed paper, made from upcycled pre-consumer cotton waste with seeds pressed in by hand. Plant it.
  • Thread — Handspun, braided cotton. Biodegrades.
  • Holder + greeting card — Seed paper, printed with water-soluble dyes. Plant it.
  • Roli & chawal pouches — Hand-marbled cotton paper. Paper.
  • Pot — Coconut fibre (coir). Natural fibre.
  • Growing disc — Compressed cocopeat. Becomes soil.
  • Nutrition disc — Compressed, dried cow dung. Traditional fertiliser.
  • Coir wrap — Coconut fibre. Natural fibre.
  • Packaging — Biodegradable, wood-free, printed with water-soluble inks. Not plastic.

It goes further than the product

Wood-free. Water-soluble dyes. Solar-powered workshop. Upcycled pre-consumer cotton. Handmade in Agra by women for whom this was often a first formal job — bringing a first bank account, provident fund and health cover along with it. The operation is moving from low-waste toward zero-waste, and this page will be updated as that changes.

This isn't new. It's the old way.

KVIC, under the Ministry of MSME, sells a natural, chemical-free rakhi called Khadi Rakshasoot, made by rural women — some of it from cotton and cow dung with seeds pressed in. The Government of India's Mission LiFE, launched together with the UN Secretary-General, asks for exactly this kind of everyday choice. A handmade cotton rakhi from Agra isn't a new invention. It's closer to how this festival worked before plastic and foil packets took over.

How we estimated rakhi waste

There is no published, verified figure for how many rakhis end up as waste in India each year — so rather than repeat an unsourced number, here is our own estimate, shown openly:

  • ~50 crore rakhis sold in India annually (source: CAIT)
  • × 5–10 grams average weight per rakhi
  • = 2,500–5,000 tonnes; our central estimate is ≈4,000 tonnes (~40 lakh kilos) a year

The weight build-up behind that average: polyester thread (1–2g), plastic or resin motif and stone (2–5g), foil, glitter, sponge backing and glue (1–2g).

On how long that waste actually takes to break down: a rakhi is typically worn for one morning. The polyester in a typical one is commonly cited at 20–200 years to decompose, the plastic beads at 400–500 years, and the glitter never really does — it just becomes microplastic. We don't publish a single tonnage figure as an established statistic, because none exists; the estimate above is ours, and the method is shown so you can check it.
